Step 1: Select Your Skateboard Deck
Skateboard decks come in many different shapes and sizes and your decision depends on your style of skating and preference. Skateboard decks usually range in width from 7" all the way up to 12". The smallest being for our younger riders and biggest for those who enjoy a bit more room under their feet. Smaller sized boards are generally better for skating street and doing tricks while bigger boards are generally better for skating transition and bowls. The most common sizes for an adult rider ranges between 8.0" - 9.0" with 8.5" being the average. This size offers a good middle ground between maneuverability and stability. the most common shape of deck is called the popsicle, here at Status we carry every size of popsicle.
Browse our extensive collection of skate decks from the core established brands including Anti Hero, Foundation, Krooked, Baker, Plan B, Real, Creature, or some of the exciting new boutique brands like Frog, Sci-Fi Fantasy, Opera, Jacuzzi Unlimited, and Good Buddy. This is only the start of our selection so make sure to check out more of all of our skateboard decks!

After finding a deck it's time to...
Select your Skateboard griptape
Griptape keeps your feet from sliding around your deck, so you're gonna need some. We've got grip from different brands like Mob, Jessup, Pepper, and more. We also have griptape with designs from brands like Powell Peralta, Shake Junt, and Hard Luck. Just make sure if the deck you selected is wider than 9" you also get extra wide griptape.
Step 2: Choose Your Skateboard Trucks
The next step in customizing your new skateboard is to select a pair of trucks. Trucks are for turning and grinds, two of the most important aspects of any skateboard setup. So let's look for a pair that fit your preferences.
Firstly select a brand for your new board. Here at Status we carry quite a few brands of trucks. The classic choices amongst many skateboarders are Independent, Ace, Thunder, or Venture. For more affordable options we carry Mini Logo, Bullet, and Tensor trucks. We also carry the industries newest trucks that allow a skater a responsive feel when turning and trucks that grind with ease. Options like the Ace AF1, Slappy's ST1, and Lurpiv's.
- We also offer many of our trucks in hollow versions that allow you to get the same truck but lighter. This allows you to pop higher and help you skate faster.
- Some trucks too have inverted kingpins which keep it from getting caught while you grind.
After you've selected which truck you want it's time to size it to the deck you selected earlier.
Use the "Truck Size" filter on our Skateboard Trucks selection page to make sure the width of your trucks will match the width of your selected Skateboard Deck. The width of the trucks axles should fall within about 1/8" above or below the width of your deck. A slightly smaller truck width is favored for more agility and faster flips, a slightly wider truck is more stable.
Step 3: Select Your Skateboard Wheels
Next let's find some wheels! Wheel choice comes down to what terrain you are going to be skating. So whether you're going to be skating rougher neighborhood streets or smoother concrete at the skatepark here's your guide to what wheel will work best.
Firstly, determining the hardness of your wheel will be the most influential aspect of the wheel. Skateboard wheel hardness is determined by the wheels durometer which works on a sliding scale. Lower durometer wheels (78a-84a) are great for cruising around the streets on rougher ground but limit your ability to maintain speed. Higher durometer wheels (90a-104a) are best for skating faster and allow you to slide which can be vital for many tricks.
Secondly, let's determine what size wheel suits your skateboarding style. Most common skateboarding wheel size ranges from 52mm to 58mm. Wheels size is a bit simpler than durometer. The bigger the wheel the faster you will go. However, a bigger wheel does add a lot of weight to the board which makes it harder to pop and flip the board. A 54mm is the most popular size for street skating and for transiting skating in bowls a bigger wheel is more typical, 56mm, 58mm, or 60mm. A riser will be necessary for bigger wheels since there will not be enough room between the truck axle and the deck. We offer many sizes, hardness, and brands of risers.
The final part of choosing your skateboard wheels are to pick a brand. Here at status we offer a large variety of wheel vendors including but not limited to: Bones, OJ's, Spitfires, Snot, and Powell Peralta.
For a wheel that both cruises great but is also the size of a common street wheel consider Ricta Clouds, OJ's Keyframe Plain Jane, or Slime Balls for a larger option.
Step 4: Select Skateboard Bearings
A good set of bearings is crucial to a smooth riding skateboard that maintains its speed. For the fastest and the smoother choose from a Bones or Bronson bearing and for a more affordable but still smooth and quite quick bearing look to Mini-Logo.
Step 5: Select Skateboard Hardware
Skateboard Hardware refers to the nuts and bolts used to attach your Skateboard Trucks to you Skateboard Deck. If you aren't using risers, we typically recommend 1" hardware. If you are using risers, just add the height of the riser to the length. So if you have 1/4 riser, grab 1.25" hardware. Our go-to hardware here in the shop is typically Independent Brand Skateboard Hardware. But browse the full collection and you will see some fun options including the Grind King Rocket Bolts and the super lightweight Ace AF1 Hollow Hardware
Step 6: Add Optional Skate Accessories
There's a variety of accessories to go on or with your new skateboard.
On the board:
Riser pads to accomodate larger bigger wheels.
Deck Rails to slide faster, further, and protect your graphic.
Bushings to change the way your board turns. Softer for quicker turns, harder for more stability.
Off the board:
Skate Tool to tighten and loosen your trucks, swap out wheels, and more.
Wax to make street spots easier to grind.
Final Checklist:Once you've chosen each component, your cart should include the following:
